10 reasons you should not be skipping breakfast

Did you eat breakfast this morning? Do you often skip breakfast completely? If so, you are not alone. About 18% of males and 13% of females between the ages of  35 and 54 skip breakfast according to a study done in 2011 by the NPD market research group.

 

We’ve heard many, many times how important breakfast is and how it is not a meal we should be skipping.  Are you sick of hearing this? In my opinion, it needs to be shared over and over because there are still far too many people skipping breakfast. Here are a 10 reasons you shouldn’t be skipping breakfast:

1. Increase your metabolism

People who skip breakfast have a metabolic rate four to five percent below normal, which may lead to weight gain of eight pounds per year.

2. Avoid obesity

People who skip breakfast tend to choose less nutritious and convenience foods to curb their appetite and may consume more calories throughout their day. Studies show that those who skip breakfast are more likely to be over weight.

3.  Provide your body with the nutrition it needs

How can you pack in the nutrition  your body needs to function at it’s best if you are only consuming two meals a day? Guess what? You can’t!! Make sure you include protein in your breakfast to feel fuller longer and induce weight loss.

4. Give your body more energy

Food provides your body with energy.  You put gas in your car to make it go, so why wouldn’t you put food in your body to make it go? If you put nothing in, you are running on empty.

5. Avoid over-eating and binge eating

Spacing your calories out throughout your day is much better than starving and binging all day.  Don’t deprive yourself of breakfast or any other meals because you just might find yourself losing control later in the day.  It makes more sense to eat a nutritious breakfast & then enjoy a piece of your son’s birthday cake rather than skipping breakfast and being so hungry that you eat several pieces of cake.

6. Be smarter

Eating breakfast provides an energy boost to the brain so you will be more alert, more focused, have better concentration & perform at your best.

7. Be happier

Eating breakfast boosts serotonin levels which controls mood, appetite and sleep.

8.  Be healthier

Skipping breakfast can weaken your immune system.  You are more likely to get sick because you are more sensitive to germs and illnesses. It not only makes you weaker, it makes your organs and cells weak too.

9. Lower your risk of developing diabetes

Skipping breakfast and meals leads to the body’s cells becoming less sensitive to insulin. When you skip meals and your cell receptors become less sensitive to or resistant to insulin, you have excess sugar floating through your bloodstream. The body then tries to produce more insulin to get sugar into the resistant cells. This cycle creates weight gain, insulin sensitivity and ultimately diabetes. Obesity and diabetes rates are 50% lower in breakfast eaters than in non-breakfast eaters.

10. Set a good example for you kids

If your kids see you skipping breakfast, more than likely they will too.  Set a good example for your kids and start your day with a nutritious breakfast and share with them why they should eat breakfast too.

I’m the only one who can give my kids a healthy, happy Mom

There are so many busy, overworked, tired and sometimes crabby Moms in the world today.  I often think about the Mom I was just 5 years ago.  I wasn’t a happy, energetic Mom. Looking back now, I feel like I was just getting by every day. I did my many duties for my family with very little time for myself. I was a stay-at-home Mom of 4 kids and we did struggle financially back then. I tried different ways to make some extra money but in the end, I just didn’t have the time or energy. I knew there was something missing in my life. I knew I wasn’t taking care of me. I wasn’t eating as healthy as I should. I wasn’t as physically active as I could have been. I had extra pounds to lose but I it wasn’t doing anything to try and change anything. I was just going through the motions every day and counting down the hours every day until my husband came home from work and the kids went to bed.

Eventually my family and I relocated out of state and that was the best thing ever for me. I had a fresh start. I had to get out and meet new people and explore my new surroundings. I got to try new things and gained my confidence back. But I still wasn’t taking care of my health. One day it just hit me that in the end, I’m the only one who can give my kids a happy healthy mom who loves life. I knew my kids deserved a happy, healthy mom and I knew I deserved it. I knew I wanted to be around for them as long as I could and the only way to ensure that was to take better care of myself. I had to eat healthier. I had to workout regularly. I had to make time for me.

It’s taken me 5 years to get where I’m at and I’m still a work in progress but I am happy and I am healthy. I take care of myself and I definitely don’t dwell on things like I used to.  I’m in charge of my own happiness. If I’m miserable, unhappy, discouraged, depressed or etc., ultimately I’m the only one who can make a change in my life to make things better. Too many people complain about things they just aren’t willing to change. So stop complaining and stop being unhappy. Your kids deserve better and so do you. If you aren’t happy with your weight, guess what? You are the only one who can change that. If you aren’t happy with your current job or lack of one, you are the one to change that too. Whatever it is that makes you unhappy can be changed. You can find happiness! I honestly believe that being truly happy with life also means you take care of your health. Being overweight, sick, tired and dealing with all sorts of health ailments can really bring someone down. I’m here to help you in anyway that I can, please reach out to me. Don’t give up! Why that number between your toes is killing your confidence

I was texting with a friend yesterday who recently started her weight loss journey with me and began using my nutritional cleansing program.  I was offering her some advice and encouragement after she had told me that she had gained a pound instead of losing even though she hopped on the scale because she “felt” she had lost.  I gave her some reasons as to why she might have gained that one pound only 2 days into the program and encouraged her to stick with the program because it works.  The entire time I’m thinking…here is a woman who has decided to make a change.  She has decided to give this program a try and for the past 2 days she has stuck to the plan, given up her diet soda and set her mind to do this.  She wakes up on day #3 and she feels great! She feels like she can see or feel a difference…possibly she has lost some weight even.  So her only true test of whether she has lost is to step on the scale.  She is excited and feels so good about herself but when she steps on the scale, she’s GAINED a pound instead of losing anything.  So, immediately she is crushed.  She starts doubting the program, doubting herself, maybe even doubting that this will even work.  Now, what if she hadn’t stepped on that scale? What if she would have gone about her day just “thinking” she’d lost and “feeling” a change in her body? She would have exuded joy, happiness and confidence because I truly believe that losing weight can make all the difference in someone’s attitude.  What’s really sad, is she probably has started shrinking those fat cells but because of that darn number staring at her from between her toes, she is feeling a bit defeated.  Why do we put SO MUCH value on that number? WHY?! That number doesn’t mean anything!! When you are trying to lose weight (the healthy way I might add), it’s more important to use measurements, pictures and how your clothes feel.  There are numerous reasons why your weight might fluctuate even 5 pounds from day to day.  It’s not always about what you ate or didn’t eat.

Here’s a confession…I have been a bit obsessed about my weight and that darn number on the scale for most of my life. Don’t all women know what they weighed in high school? I think my driver license might still have that weight. Shhh…  And back then, I thought that I weighed too much! I’ve always weighed more than you would guess just by looking at me.  I was always told I had “big bones” even when I was a size 5 or 7. 😉 Just always remember that muscle weighs more than fat…if only I had more muscle! Anyway, there was a time in my life a few years ago when I was very obsessed with the number on the scale, so much so that I would weigh myself several times a day every day.  At the time I was using a prescription to help me lose weight…essentially I was starving myself because of that prescription.  It was not a good idea nor do I suggest that anyone try to lose weight that way…because guess what? That weight will come back unless you change your lifestyle!

Those who understand how the body works, know that weighing yourself daily, let alone several times a day is not a good idea! So, one day I decided that I wasn’t going to let that number control me anymore.  If I didn’t like what it said, it truly did control my mood for the day.  It was always in the back of my mind that I had gained a pound or two or whatever.  I would question why and get upset that I couldn’t lose.  It was making me miserable.  So, I threw out my scale! And for about a year, I didn’t weigh myself.  I only got weighed at my yearly exams.  Eventually sometime in the last year or so, I bought a scale because I wanted to see my progress and I told myself it would be different this time.  I wouldn’t weigh every day, several times a day.  But guess what…eventually I was weighing every day and that stupid number would then either get my day off to a great start or a grumpy one! Being in the business that I’m in, people want to know the numbers.  Showing “before” and “after” photos just isn’t good enough.  They want to know how many pounds you’ve lost and how many inches? Who cares! Just look at my results!! But since I started a new nutritional cleansing program, I have started to weigh myself again but I DO NOT weigh daily.  I weigh myself twice a week maybe and I stop myself from weighing daily.  I suggest to my clients that they not weigh every day either.  Don’t let that number control you.  Don’t let that number kill your confidence.  Let the way your clothes start to fit as you lose the weight be your confidence booster, not a number.  Take pictures so you can compare your “before” with your “after”.  I love looking at my “before” and “after” pictures.  I can see the changes.

So, here are my 5 week results…I’ve lost 3 inches in my waist and 3 inches in my hips.  How much weight do you think I’ve lost?

5 Ingredients You Don’t Need in Your Protein Shake

I’ve tried so many different protein shakes over the years. I’ve finally found the perfect one for me! How does your stand up to my checklist?

Over the years, I’ve tried many different brands, flavors and types of protein shakes.  I admit it! I’m a protein shake junkie! I drink one for breakfast almost every day & I have for years.  For me it’s a quick, easy, healthy way to get my day started.  If you find a tasty protein shake mix packed with protein, vitamins, minerals and good nutrition that is.  There are so many different brands, types, price ranges, etc and believe me, I’ve tried so many! When shopping for a protein shake, in my opinion there are 5 big NO NO’s that you don’t want in your shake.  You need to start reading the nutritional label on your protein shake mix & know what you are putting into your body.  Many of the ingredients are not really necessary & some are just so bad for you.  So while you think you are doing the “healthy” thing by drinking one or two a day, think again!

5 ingredients you do not need in your protein shake:

(1)  Soy ~ Contains high levels of phytic acid & phytoestrogens which withdraw nutrients when processed by the body. Soy has been linked to endocrine disruption, infertility, breast cancer, hypothyroidism & thyroid cancer.

(2) GMO’s ~ “genetically modified organisms” is a plant or meat product that has had it’s DNA artificially altered in a lab by genes of other plants, animals, viruses or bacteria in order to produce foreign compounds into that food.  Virtually all GMO’s are bred to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce and insecticide.  (Yum! Exactly what I want for breakfast!! NOT!!) These GMO’s have been linked to all sorts of organ failures & diseases.

(3) Artificial colors ~ These are artificial dyes made from chemicals derived from petroleum. The  same stuff used to make gasoline, diesel fuel and asphalt.  These artificial dyes have been linked to: brain cancer, nerve-cell disorientation, anxiety & hyperactivity in children.  There are currently only 7 artificial dyes on the FDA’s food list & many of these are currently being tested for a list of health reasons.

(4) Artificial flavors ~ Once again these flavors are chemically derived.  They offer no nutritional value but do offer a slew of health risks.  Their use has been linked to ADHD, asthma, allergies, cancers & a list of other diseases and illnesses.

(5) Artificial Sweeteners ~ Also know as aspartame, sucralose & sacchrin are chemically derived to mimic the taste of sugar without the calories.  They have been linked to: decreased vision, headaches/migraines, depression, severe PMS, fibromyalgia, cancers, hyperactivity in children, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome & more.

PROTEIN SHAKES
Protein shakes can be packed with lots of stuff your body just doesn’t need. Learn to read the nutritional label.

There are 2 more important factors to consider when choosing the right protein shake mix for your lifestyle.  If you are planning on using your shake as a meal replacement, then your shake must have between 240 to 300 calories to be classified as a meal replacement and it should also have at least 20 grams of protein.  If it doesn’t meet these 2 requirements, then you should keep shopping.  Your brain needs fat and natural sugar.  The brain is the only organ that draws nearly all its energy from glucose. It’s also the body’s second-highest deposit of fat, after fatty tissue itself (such as the butt and the gut).  Essential fatty acids are fats that are necessary within the human body. The word “fats” is often associated with bad health, but there are some essential fatty acids that are necessary for your survival.

The secret to weight loss…it might surprise you!!

It’s time to get real for a moment! There are SO MANY companies out there selling weight loss products, pills, potions, patches, shakes, gadgets and etc.  You’ve seen them on tv, in magazine ads, on social media and maybe even tried a few.  I have tried more than my fair share of them hoping to shed a few pounds.  I’ve also battled with my weight most of my adult life.  I lose the weight only to gain it back again.  I tried to blame it on my age or my metabolism.  I just kept trying product after product hoping I would find the one that works for me…that “magic” pill, potion, diet, etc. that would have me shedding the pounds and shopping for skinny jeans in just a few weeks.  Well, guess what?! All of those weight loss products out there are wasting our time and money.  We know this so why do we keep purchasing them? Is it because we have hope that maybe this one will work? This one will be different? There is NO “magic” to losing weight.  I will let you in on a little secret that I’ve finally learned even though I’d heard it over and over most of my life.  The secret to losing weight is proper nutrition & exercise.  Yep! You have to eat good food and move more.  It sucks…doesn’t it? To actually get the body you want and deserve you have to work for it!

We need to stop being lazy and stop making excuses for why we are overweight, tired, sick and etc.  We need to stop spending money on products that might give us short term weight loss results but as soon as we go back to our old habits or stop taking/using the products we gain the weight back.  We need to start feeding our bodies to fuel them so they work like they are supposed to work.  We need to stop eating the processed junk food that does nothing for our bodies and start eating more fruits, veggies, proteins and etc.  Drink more water and less soda, coffee and sweet tea.  Feed your body the good nutrition it needs.  If you aren’t fueling your body properly how do you expect it to run properly? You don’t expect your car to run without gas…right? Same thing here…good food is fuel for your body.  Stop eating so many high-glycemic carbs too…the breads, pastas, rices, cookies, etc.  I don’t consider those “food”…those are treats and you should avoid them if possible.

Maybe you don’t want to join a gym, purchase a fitness dvd or start running…that’s ok but you can start moving your feet one foot in front of the other & here’s a bonus, walking is free!! Start walking every day.  Maybe it’s not very far at first but keep going a little farther every day.  Believe me, you will feel the difference!! Find a friend who wants to lose weight and start walking together or join a fitness class if you that interests you.  Just start moving!!
